Slate roofing is a long-lasting and beautiful roofing product. If your budget allows it, slate can be a striking choice for your roof. GAF has come up with a special system (called TruSlateⓇ) that allows slate tiles to be hung on hooks, rather than nailed. This means much less overlap is necessary, less weight will be on your roof, and slate might be able to fit in your budget. You can assume somewhere between $800-$1,000/square for a TruSlateⓇ roof.
In lieu of the shorter overlap, GAF’s TruSlate system incorporates UnderBlock™ UV & Moisture Barrier, which “maintains the integrity and the performance of the roof by replacing the additional slate with a highly durable substrate used in landfills and to coat telephone wires. High-density polyethylene lasts for hundreds of years, even with direct UV exposure,” as stated in GAF’s TruSlate Pro Field Guide (p. 18).
One beauty of GAF’s TruSlate system is the fact that if a tile got broken, it can easily be replaced by sliding out the damaged tile, and “shoehorning” in a new tile. It’s an incredibly easy fix compared to traditional tile repair.
